Video Games Competition And It's Real World Effects
![]() |
There is an almost endless choice of video console games on the market, and each format has hundreds of games for each console. The release of new consoles for video games has reached a frenzy normally reserved for the biggest concerts. New consoles are sold out almost as soon as they are released. Die-hard fans sleep for days in front of mall stores, hoping to be first in line to buy. Some fans of video games even sell their hard-won consoles for a profit in online auctions.
The are some hot new gaming platforms to consider: the Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 2 and 3, and Microsoft Xbox 360. All three companies are major players in the video games arena. Microsoft got a late start, but has built a loyal following. These hot and rare video gaming consoles are worthless without games to play on them. Some of the recently released video games for these consoles are discussed in the following paragraphs.
One of our favourite gamers thinks "Gears of War" is one of the hottest video games for the Xbox 360. The theme is familiar: humanity fights for survival against invading alien hordes. Photo-realistic animation and cinematic cut scenes give the game a richness and texture that is mesmerizing. This game does have a story, although that doesn't matter to some gamers. Most buy it for the intense combat action. Gamers can play it online via the Xbox Live multiplayer option for video games.
Some of our other gamer contacts also think "Guitar Hero II" appeals to a different audience. It was developed for both the PlayStation 2 and the Xbox 360. These video games feature a different kind of battle -- a battle of the bands. Players assume the personas of musicians who want to become rock stars. Even the controller is shaped like a guitar. Players can compete against each other or collaborate during play. These video games involve some actual physical movement, as opposed to the usual thumb-twiddling method of play.
Even though its only early days, there are even some video games for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) starting to appear. "Resistance: Fall of Man" features a U.S./UK military collaboration against yet more invading aliens. The aliens possess a vampiric ability to transform killed soldiers into more aliens. Oddly enough, it is one of the World War II genre of video games. However, the opponents are extraterrestrials instead of humans. Of the video games available at the launch of the PS3, insiders cite this as one of the best.
The age of the recipient is the most important consideration before buying these video games as gifts. These console games feature intense, immersive game play that may not be suitable for younger players. The selection of video games for the newer gaming consoles is limited, so almost any game you pick will be welcome by your relative who loves video games.
