Only The Hottest Video Game Hardware Will Do!

In modern video game systems it is the video game hardware where all the magic occurs. These games are produced like movies, with virtual actors, choreography, directors, sound tracks, and voice actors. The on-screen characters are photo-realistic and move according to detailed motion capture studies. Dozens or hundreds of characters interact simultaneously on the screen. Each character must be able to respond to constant input from the player's game control as well as react to changing game conditions. The video game hardware required to do all of that has to be extremely powerful.

The video game console market is pretty hot at the moment. The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii are some of the most recognizable names. They are waging real economic war to conquer the shopper's money. Manufacturers know that customers who buy a video game console are often tied to that format for the life of the system. Therefore each manufacturer tries to create and market the hottest video game hardware in hopes of snaring the customer first.

Just like a computer, it is the central processing units (CPU) in the video game hardware that does most of the work. Several of these CPUs are usually arranged in a proprietary configuration, with each one doing a different job. Their main job is to provide the artificial intelligence (AI) for the game characters not controlled by the player. The AI has to be able to figure out how every character will react to any game condition they encounter. It also calculates when two game items collide, and what the result will be.

Take this example, the angle, direction, and speed of fired bullet when using the video game hardware, and whether there are any targets along its path is determined by AI. If the first target is an inanimate object, perhaps a puff of smoke and a ricochet sound will be heard. If the target is a player, the AI determines what part of the player was struck, and if the damage is lethal. If there are dozens of players firing hundreds of rounds per second each, the video game hardware must be able to keep up with each round.

The second most productive part is the video processor. Sometimes the graphics processing unit (GPU) is proprietary, and sometimes it is a commercial unit adapted for the console. The GPU takes its directions from the AI. The AI tells the graphics video game hardware where each and every item is on the screen. The GPU must then display the item's movement consistent with the game's physics. If those dozen players are still firing hundreds of rounds per second, the video game hardware responsible for the graphics has to display every bullet and everything it strikes.

Controllers are also an essential part of the video game hardware. Video game players use specialized controllers to move their players. The AI calculates the results of these actions, and the graphics processor updates the screen with the results. Newer controllers allow players to manipulate the controllers in 3-D space like a real weapon. The game console detects these movements and converts them into game results.

Today's complex video game systems rely on heavily on latest technology video game hardware to create a realistic and fun experience. You can be sure that the video game hardware in your console is working extra hard so that you can have fun.
